OS Max 30 S Control Line or Free Flight Gas Model Airplane EngineNice example of this popular engine
OS is well known for their innovative engine designs and fine craftsmanship. The .30 was brought out in 1964 as an R/C version to power models in the .25 to .35 range. It was lightweight, had great handling characteristics and shared some parts with the previously released .35 S. As well, they had a great durability, giving modellers many years of trouble-free operation.
Control line fliers discovered that they were a great stunt motor for lightweight airplanes, possessing a flawless 4-2-4 break and a forgiving needle setting. The control line group badgered the OS suppliers for 14 years before the factory reissued the .30 with a fixed needle and venturi in 1977.
This engine has been fitted with an Enya needle valve and 6.3 mm venturi.
The Enya needle valve is one of my favourites. They are finely machined and finished and provide a very forgiving adjustment range. The flexible spring and large thumbwheel allow significant variances in mounting and keeps your fingers away from the propeller. The outside diameter is a industry standard 4 mm and works well with many engines. The needle valve parts and assemblies are still available in many different sizes from “shtterman” on eBay or direct from Enya Metal Products in Japan.
The motor has great fuel suction and handling. It is a baffle piston motor which, as mentioned, will hold a 4-2-4 break without running away. If you want more power, drill out the (2.49” or 6.3mm) venturi and run it on pressure. Even in this trim, the motor will smarten up the performance of a .29 sized model without paying a penalty in weight.
Compression and fits are very good. It hand starts hot or cold easily with a minimum of prime.
Comes with the 9x6 Master Airscrew propeller and muffler used for test runs and shown in the photos. Glow plug is good and was used for the test runs.
Be aware that these motors need fuel with at least 25% castor oil in the mix. Use less at your peril.
Great motor for stunt or general use.
