Masayuki Miyata
was born on October 30, 1926, in Tokyo (died in 1997). He is known for using a rather rare medium - papercuts. The Japanese call it
kiri-e
. And secondly, in 1995 he was appointed as an official artist for the United Nations.
Although known for his papercuts, the artist worked also with the medium of the traditional Japanese woodblock print and with silkscreens. At first sight, it is not always obvious which technique the artist used for an art work.
Masayuki Miyata
was largely a self-trained artist. He began as an illustrator for the publishing company Charles E. Tuttle Co. in 1954. Until 1965 he used the artist name
Masakazu Kuwata
. The Japanese artists have a tradition of taking artist names different from their given name, and to change this name during their career every now and then. However for artists active after 1945, this habit is hardly practiced any longer. It may also be counterproductive for the promotion of an artist's career.
Biographies of the artist mention that
Masayuki Miyata
became known to a larger audience when he made the illustrations for the book publications of the famous Japanese writer Tanizaki Junichiro.
